The treads can run in either direction, and the direction of travel is normally dictated by the hinge position of the door above. With a left-hand hinge, the treads descend to the right as you look at the door; with a right-hand hinge, they descend to the left. Confirming your hinge orientation before ordering ensures the staircase lands where you need it.
